Leadership Is Overglorified

There is a saying that I am inclined to agree with that goes, “You are not a leader if no one can or will follow you.” But what all does that mean? It can mean a lot of things for a lot of people so I don’t arrogantly assume that I have the “Definition that ends all Definitions of Leadership”.

There is defining LEADERSHIP by your actions, as opposed to your words (written, spoken, or otherwise), that will undoubtedly have a much bigger effect. See the thing about being a leader is that you have to be easy to follow. In Direct Sales or Network Marketing mastering the art of duplication is key.

Leadership is sometimes tough because you have to make sure that it is not about yourself – NOT EVER! I will also say that being the first follower is an under appreciated form of leadership!  That statement is best illustrated with this AMAZING video that you may or may not have seen yet. You may have to watch it twice because it is hilarious, but you will learn a lot if you will listen as much as you watch!

So I wanted to recap with you just a few little points from the video that may help you along the way as you are working on your own skills as a leader, or as you are mentoring others to become leaders:

Nurture Your Followers as Equals: Make everything about your “movement” or the “cause” that you care championing, not you!

Be Public and Easy To Follow: Your movement or cause needs to be known get it out there, How else can anyone follow you if they don’t know you or know what you stand for. If you don’t stand for anything, why would someone stand with you?

Leadership is Overglorified: The Leader is often the one who gets a lot of the credit but as we saw in the video, It was the first followers that turned the “Lone Nut” into a leader. We are all told to be a leader but that wouldn’t really be effective because the majority of followers follow a follower who has the courage to be the leader of all the followers, make sense? More people will emulate followers than leaders.

If you can’t duplicate something the more difficult it is to follow you; transversely, The easier it is to follow you; the more likely you will be viewed as a leader. Funny how that happens, huh? It is not until you get your first follower that you are a leader until then, guess what you are a “Lone Nut!”

There is no cause or movement if no one follows you. I have heard quite a bit that one man can make a difference but I believe it is the Courageous First Follower, not the Leader is when things go from being “Status Quo” to “Changing

This is what I love about my teammates, that I affectionately refer to as the “Redeemed Team! I am absolutely nothing without the people holding me up to the position where I am. I mean yes I did come up with and settle on the name; Yes being an Ocean Avenue Independent Ambassador is amazing and my team makes it easy but, My Team has made this “lone nut” into a proud Leader. We will change the world one waistline, one blood pressure lowered, one diabetic medicine discarded, one meal, one complexion, and definitely one lifestyle AT A TIME!

Join, NOT THIS Lone Nut, but a team of COURAGEOUS FOLLOWERS WILL make a difference… TOGETHER!

I hope you found value in today’s post and I look forward to receiving your comments and connecting with you.
Talk to you soon!

  1. That’s a really cool video.

I first saw it last year. You can’t be a great leadwer if you’ve never been a great follower.

Hope to be able to catch your show on wednesday night.
