Still Haven’t Forgotten, We Should Never Forget!

Remembering:  Ivan Rodriguez

I remember a very hot day, on July 6th,1992, at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) in Columbia, SC, thinking, “WHAT AM I DOING!?”

Especially after coming off the most fun I have EVER HAD in the month of June; wrapped up by a crazy, fun, Fourth Of July send off. I was wondering if I would ever have that kind of fun in the Army. I was definitely entering the military still a teenage boy wondering, “What was in this for me, other than Free College and getting away from my crazy, psycho ex-girlfriend?” While pondering this we were whisked away to take pictures right after they shaved my head – and face!  I was really not that happy. I then noticed my fellow soldier Ivan Rodriguez, rubbing a picture of his dad and granddad who have both given their life for their country. After hearing that I asked, “Dude why you are here? This would be the last place I would be!” He just looked at me and said that learning from two men who gave so much for so many… It would be an honor for him to be known as such. I instantly began to have a lot of respect for him, and learned it is about others… NOT ME! We later went on to become Battle Buddies, Foxhole Buddies, you name it we were an inseparable team – even when times we should not have been! I learned a lot from Ivan. He taught me about being part of something bigger than yourself and sacrificing for the good of others.   Ivan should have been named “Teammate ALL TIME”; he epitomized everything you could ever want in a leader and a teammate. To be candid, I learned more from him as a person and what it meant to care for others than any class, self-help book, or course could have ever taught me. Fast forward to today. All of the things that I learned about integrity from Ivan; doing the things that you say you are going to be there for others; doing the hard things that others won’t – but needs to be done; Never quitting; Lifting as I climb, leaving NO man behind!  These are the things that are the cornerstone of who I will always seek to become, practice, and what I am always striving to be and what I set out to do for my team members. As I remember Ivan and reflect upon the team which I am now a part of, I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to help transform lives both physically and financially. This is truly a blessing and an opportunity to share with my fellow mankind, a gift that CHANGES their lives. Being part of a TEAM and shaking up the world one day at a time is a gift that I can truly attribute to Ivan Rodriquez for inspiring me by giving birth to that desire many years ago.

I hope you found value in today’s post and I look forward to receiving your comments and connecting with you.

Talk to you soon!

  1. Awesome!!! I often wonder sometimes why people join the military, especially those who’ve lost someone close….but this is exactly why! So thankful for all of our service men & women as well as their families!

  2. Men and Women sign up willing to risk the ultimate sacrfice for our country and people like, me. Their value system runs deep and we are all blessed because of their commitment and service. (Thank you to my brother, Chris!)
Thank you, Tony, for a wonderful reflection.
